Choosing an antenna
Gain is the big decision. Lower gain antennas, around 2.1dBi, radiate a taller signal pattern that suits hilly and timbered country, while higher gain antennas, around 6.6dBi, throw a flatter, longer pattern for open plains and highway running. That is why GME's heavy duty all terrain packs include both a 2.1dBi and a 6.6dBi option in the one kit.
Durability matters just as much off road. Heavy duty antennas are built to cope with scrub strikes and constant corrugations, and the mounting position affects real world performance as much as the antenna itself. If patchy mobile reception is your bigger problem, a Cel-Fi GO phone booster with its paired external antenna is the tool for that job.

What is the difference between a UHF antenna and a phone booster antenna?
They serve different systems. A UHF antenna works with your radio for vehicle to vehicle comms, while a Cel-Fi GO booster and its antenna amplify mobile signal from a specific carrier. Plenty of tourers run both.
