Work backwards from the accessory and the surface. A light bar on a roof platform needs brackets made for that platform's channels, a UHF aerial on a bullbar needs a clamp or tab that suits the bar's tube, and universal brackets cover the odd jobs in between. Getting this pairing right first saves drilling holes you will later regret.

Once the style is sorted, think about strength and finish. Off-road vibration is relentless, so look for solid construction, use quality locking hardware where you can, and check the finish suits life in the weather. If the bracket carries anything electrical, plan the cable run at the same time so the wiring lands where you need it.
