Using the wrong type shortens its life quickly, so decide what the battery has to power before comparing brands.

Chemistry is the next call. Lead acid and AGM batteries are a well proven choice, while lithium deep cycle batteries, like the HardKorr units we stock, offer more usable capacity for less weight. What is the difference between starting and deep cycle batteries?

A starting battery produces a big burst of current to crank an engine but does not cope well with being run flat. A deep cycle battery is designed to be discharged and recharged repeatedly, which makes it the right pick for fridges, lighting and camp power.

Is lithium worth it for touring?

Lithium deep cycle batteries are lighter and let you use more of their rated capacity, which is why many touring setups now run them. They do need compatible charging, so talk to our Burwood team about the whole system.
