Choosing the right roof top tent

Start with what the tent will sit on. A roof top tent needs racks or a platform rated to carry its weight while you drive, called the dynamic load rating. Most tents in this range weigh about as much as an adult passenger, so light duty bars will not do the job. Check your rack rating before you buy, and remember the static rating, which covers the racks while parked with people in the tent, is much higher. The driving number is the one that matters.

Style is the next call. Fold out tents like the Darche Ridgeback Highrize and Intrepidor open up to give more floor space than their packed size, and the 1250, 1400 and 1550 models are named for their folded width in millimetres. Pop up tents like the Darche Kozi set up in under a minute and sit lower on the roof, which helps with wind noise and fuel use, but they sleep fewer people. The TJM Boulia and Yulara round out the range, so the choice comes down to how many people you sleep and how often you move camp.

Almost any 4x4, wagon or ute can carry one, provided the racks are rated for the tent's weight on the move. Bring your vehicle into our Burwood workshop and we will check your existing racks or match a platform to the tent you want.

A pop up like the Darche Kozi opens in under a minute and packs down just as fast, which suits tourers who move camp most days. A fold out like the Ridgeback Highrize takes a little longer to set up but gives you more sleeping space for its packed size, which suits couples and families staying put for a few nights.
