Choosing the right awning

Start with coverage. A 180 degree awning like the Darche Eclipse 180 wraps from the rear of the vehicle around the side, which suits utes and wagons where you cook and camp off one side. A 270 degree awning such as the Darche Eclipse 270 Gen 2 or the HardKorr 270 covers the side and the rear in one sweep, giving you roughly double the shaded area for barely any extra setup time. Free standing designs hold their shape without legs in calm weather, though you should always peg and guy any awning down before leaving it unattended.

Check your mounting before you order. Awnings bolt to a roof rack, platform or gutter mount brackets, not to bare roof sheet metal, so make sure your rack can carry the weight and has enough mounting points along the awning length. Side matters too. The HardKorr free standing 270 in this range is a left hand side model, so confirm which side of your vehicle you want the awning on before you buy.

If you camp in one spot for a few days, walls turn an awning into a proper room. The Darche Eco Eclipse 270 wall set and the HardKorr door and window wall are made for their matching awnings, and the TJM awning rooms suit 2m and 2.5m straight awnings. Walls are model specific, so match the wall to the exact awning you run.

Awning FAQs

What is the difference between a 180 and a 270 degree awning?

A 180 degree awning shades one side and part of the rear of the vehicle, while a 270 wraps around the corner to cover both. The 270 gives you much more usable space but is heavier and needs a longer rack to mount to. If you mostly want quick shade at lunch stops, a 180 is lighter and cheaper.

Do I need a roof rack to fit an awning?

Yes, you need a rack, platform or suitable brackets, since awnings cannot mount to the roof panel itself. Two or three solid mounting points spread along the awning are the norm. If you are not sure your current rack will take one, bring the vehicle into our Burwood workshop and we will check it before you spend anything.

Can one person set up a 270 degree awning?

The current generation Darche and HardKorr 270s are designed for one person setup, and free standing models make it easier again because you are not juggling legs. First setup takes longer while you learn the fold pattern. After a few trips most people have it out in under two minutes.
