Know before you buy

Before you buy a bull bar

A bull bar bolts to your vehicle's chassis and has to work with its airbags, sensors and front suspension. These are the things to check before you choose one, and the Victorian rules that apply.

  1. Your exact vehicle

Bars are made for a specific make, model and build date. A bar for an earlier version of your vehicle won't necessarily fit a later one, so check the listing's fitment against your build date.

  2. Airbag compatibility

On a vehicle with airbags, Victoria only allows a bar certified by the vehicle maker, designed for that model, or shown by the bar maker not to affect crash performance or airbag timing (VSI 1).

  3. Sensors, radar and cameras

Many late-model utes have parking sensors, a front camera or radar in the bumper. A change that stops safety systems like emergency braking or adaptive cruise working isn't acceptable in Victoria (VSI 8), so check the bar suits your model's sensors.

  4. Weight, winch and lights

The bar, a winch and anything mounted on it count towards the front axle load, which can't exceed the maker's rating. If a winch is likely, buy a winch-compatible bar now. Lights must sit behind the bar's front face.

Common questions

Are bull bars legal in Victoria?

Yes, when the bar meets Transport Victoria's bull bar rules (VSI 1). It must be built to AS 4876.1, mounted on the vehicle maker's attachment points, no wider than the vehicle, no more than 75 mm (or 9 degrees) further forward than the front of the vehicle, and it can't block your view or the required lights. Vehicles with airbags have the extra airbag rule above.

What does "airbag compatible" mean?

Airbags fire on timing set by how the front of the vehicle crumples. Victoria accepts a bar on an airbag-equipped vehicle when it is certified by the vehicle maker, designed for that model, or shown by the bar maker not to affect crash compliance or airbag timing (VSI 1). That is why bars are model specific.

Will my parking sensors and front camera still work?

It depends on the bar and your model. Some bars are made with sensor mounts, and some vehicles need a relocation kit. Victoria doesn't allow a modification that stops driver-assist systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise or lane support working (VSI 8), so tell us what your vehicle has before you buy.

Steel or alloy?

Steel bars handle heavier strikes but add more weight over the front axle. Alloy bars are lighter, which matters if your vehicle is close to its GVM or will also carry a winch, lights and a second battery.

Bull bar or nudge bar?

A nudge bar is smaller and lighter, protects the centre of the front and gives you somewhere to mount lights. A bull bar protects the whole front, including the headlights. Transport Victoria notes that most bull bars increase the risk of injury to pedestrians and are best suited to vehicles used in rural areas or off-road (VSI 1).

Can I mount a light bar on my bull bar?

Yes, if it sits behind the bar's front face and only works with your high beam. Victoria allows up to four extra driving lights in total, light bars included (VSI 1, VSI 8).

Where must my number plate go?

It must stay upright, no higher than 1.3 m from the ground and readable from 20 m (Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 2021, reg 63). Some bars move the plate to a new bracket.
