With the huge air flow demands of each engine in the Toyota 10/2011 - 06/2015 Onwards 3.0L Diesel 1KD-FTV 25 Series Hilux, Safari took the decision to design a snorkel system that raised the air intake to prevent ingesting harmful elements to the vehicles air cleaner.

The most obvious is to funnel cool clean air into the snorkel body - but just as importantly, the Safari air ram acts as a highly efficient water separator to remove rain water from the incoming air stream - thus ensuring safe engine operation through even the most torrential tropical storms.

Know before you buy
Before you buy a snorkel
A snorkel moves your engine's air intake up to roof height, above the dust and spray. It's a precise, vehicle-specific fit, and it won't make your vehicle waterproof.
- Made for your engine
Snorkels are made for a specific model and engine, so a Prado diesel and a Prado V6 take different kits. Check the listing against your vehicle and engine.
- Not waterproofing
A snorkel raises the air intake. It doesn't seal the engine bay or electrics, and your vehicle maker's wading depth still applies.
- Breathers too
Factory diff and gearbox breathers often sit low. Many owners raise them at the same time as fitting a snorkel.
- Which way to face it
The air ram separates rain from the air coming in. Turning it backwards in heavy dust can reduce airflow (Safari).
Common questions
Is a snorkel worth it if I don't cross water?
Many owners fit one for dust. The intake sits at roof height, above the dust thrown up on gravel roads and behind other vehicles.
Can I drive through deeper water with a snorkel?
No. A snorkel moves the air intake, but it doesn't waterproof the engine bay, electrics or driveline. Your vehicle maker's wading depth still applies.
Are factory raised air intakes the same as a snorkel?
No. Safari notes that factory raised intakes are not watertight.
Do I need diff breathers?
Factory diff and gearbox breathers are often poorly located for water crossings (ARB). A breather kit raises them so water isn't drawn in as the housings cool.
Should I use a pre-cleaner sock?
Only on dusty tracks below 40 km/h, cleaned daily, and not on the highway (Safari).
