Choosing the right recovery equipment
Start with your vehicle's weight, not the biggest number on the shelf. A winch should be rated to at least 1.5 times your 4x4's loaded weight, which is why 10,000lb and 12,000lb units like the Bushranger COVERT and REVO suit most touring rigs. Synthetic rope is lighter and safer if it lets go, while wire rope shrugs off abrasion on rocky ground. Kinetic recovery ropes work differently again, stretching to build momentum, so they must be matched to vehicle weight and only ever connected to rated recovery points, never a tow ball.
If you are starting from scratch, a complete recovery kit such as HardKorr's 12 piece kit covers straps, shackles, dampener and gloves in one bag. Add a long handled shovel and an exhaust jack like the Bushranger X-Jack for sand and mud work, where a standard jack simply sinks. Whatever you buy, check your vehicle has proper rated recovery points front and rear before your first trip, because factory tie-down points are not built for snatch loads.
Recovery equipment FAQs
What size winch do I need for my 4x4?
Multiply your vehicle's loaded weight by 1.5 as a minimum. For most dual cab utes and wagons set up for touring, that lands at a 10,000lb to 12,000lb winch. Going bigger gives you headroom when you are recovering a heavily loaded vehicle from deep mud.
What is the difference between a kinetic rope and a snatch strap?
Both stretch to store energy, but kinetic ropes stretch further and release it more smoothly, which is easier on both vehicles. HardKorr's kinetic ropes come in 3m and 10m lengths to suit different recovery situations. Either way, use a rated shackle and a cable dampener.
Can you fit a winch to my bull bar?
Yes. Our Burwood workshop fits winches regularly, including wiring to the battery and checking the bar is winch compatible. Book in by calling 03 9808 8966 and we can confirm fitment for your bar before you buy.
