Know before you buy

Before you buy a UHF radio

A UHF CB radio keeps you in touch with your convoy, trucks and other road users where there's no phone signal. No licence application is needed, but there are rules on channels and power.

  1. In-car or handheld

A fixed in-car radio runs at up to 5 watts through a roof or bar-mounted antenna. A handheld is handy outside the vehicle but has less range.

  2. The antenna matters

Low gain (around 2.1 dBi) suits hilly country, mid gain (5.1 to 6.6 dBi) suits suburbs and general touring, and high gain (8.1 dBi) suits flat outback (GME).

  3. Know the emergency channels

Channels 5 and 35 are the emergency channels, and no tones may be used on them. Channels 22 and 23 are for telemetry only.

  4. Repeaters

Repeaters extend your range: their outputs are channels 1 to 8 and 41 to 48, and you transmit on 31 to 38 and 71 to 78.

Common questions

Do I need a licence for a UHF radio?

No application or fee. UHF CB radios are covered by the ACMA's CB class licence, so you just follow its rules.

What are the emergency channels?

Channels 5 and 35. In a real emergency you may use any channel to get help (ACMA).

How powerful can my radio be?

Up to 5 watts of transmitter power (CB Class Licence 2025).

Which antenna should I choose?

Match the gain to where you drive: about 2.1 dBi in hills, 5.1 to 6.6 dBi for suburbs and general country, and 8.1 dBi for flat open country (GME).

How do repeaters work?

A repeater listens on one channel and re-broadcasts on another from a high point, extending your range. Repeater outputs are channels 1 to 8 and 41 to 48; you transmit on the matching input, 31 to 38 or 71 to 78. Running your own repeater needs an apparatus licence (ACMA).
