Choosing fuel and water storage for touring

Work out your numbers before your hardware. For water, a common rule of thumb is several litres per person per day, plus a reserve for cooking, washing and the odd extra night. For fuel, compare your vehicle's real world consumption, loaded and towing if that applies, against the longest gap between fills on your route, then add a margin.

How you carry it matters as much as how much. Water belongs in food grade containers, fuel belongs in approved containers stored outside the cabin, and everything needs securing so it stays put on rough tracks. In the cab, a decent bottle and tumbler, like the TJM drinkware in this range, keeps drinks handy between stops.

Fuel & Water Tanks FAQs

How much water should I carry?

Plan on several litres per person per day for drinking and cooking, more in hot weather, plus a buffer in case you are out longer than expected. For remote travel, carry more than you think you will need, split across more than one container.

What is a safe way to carry extra fuel?

Use containers approved for fuel, keep them outside the cabin, and secure them so they cannot shift or chafe. Check your total load stays within your vehicle's limits once water and fuel are aboard.

Can you help plan a long range touring setup?

Yes. As an authorised TJM stockist with a workshop at Burwood in Melbourne's east, we help customers plan water, fuel and storage for remote trips. Call 03 9808 8966 to talk it through.
