Choosing the right light bar

Start with beam pattern, not size. Spot beams throw light a long way down the road and suit open highway touring. Flood or double row bars spread light wide, which helps on tight bush tracks where roos come from the side. A combo beam, like the Lightforce 20 inch combo, gives you both in one housing and is the safe pick if you only run one bar.

Size and mounting come next. A 10 inch bar such as the Lightforce Viper tucks neatly into a bull bar or behind the grille, while 20 to 42 inch bars typically mount across the bull bar or on brackets above the bumper. Check the mounting width you actually have before buying, and think about wiring. A plug and play harness like the HardKorr dual output unit saves a lot of mucking around and keeps the install tidy.

Legality matters too. In most states, including Victoria, light bars must be wired so they only operate with high beam, must not obstruct your view or the number plate, and roof mounting rules vary by state. If in doubt, ask us before you buy and we will steer you right.

Light bar FAQs

Are LED light bars legal in Australia?

Yes, when fitted correctly. They must switch off automatically when you drop back to low beam, must be mounted securely without blocking airflow to the radiator or your line of sight, and each state has its own rules on placement. We fit bars to comply with Victorian requirements every week.

What do amber filters or amber bars do?

Amber light cuts glare bounce in dust, fog and rain, so you get less reflection back at the windscreen. Options like the Lightforce HTX2 amber spot filter or the amber Viper bar are popular with drivers who tour on dusty outback roads.

Can Complete 4x4 fit my light bar?

Yes. Our Burwood workshop wires and fits light bars, including relays, switches and high beam integration, whether you bought the bar from us online or in store. Call 03 9808 8966 to book a fitting.
