The handbook and compliance plate list maximum braked and unbraked towing capacity along with the towball download limit, and your towbar needs a rating to match what you actually plan to pull. If a caravan or loaded tandem trailer is in your future, it is worth fitting a bar rated for it now rather than upgrading later.
Then think about everything around the bar. Trailer wiring has to match your plug type, trailers running electric brakes need a brake controller, and towing mirrors earn their place once a caravan blocks your view. How do I know what my vehicle can tow?
Your owner's handbook and the manufacturer's specifications list braked capacity, unbraked capacity and maximum towball download. The lowest rated link in the chain sets the real limit, so never tow beyond what the vehicle, bar or coupling is rated to carry.
