A UHF radio is the one accessory every touring 4x4 should carry. It works where your phone does not, whether you are calling a convoy on a dirt track or a road train on the Plenty Highway. We stock the GME range, from compact in-car units like the XRS-330C and TX3350 to 5 watt handhelds such as the TX6600S, plus antenna mounts and brackets. Buy online with Australia-wide shipping, or have your radio wired in and tuned at our Burwood workshop in Melbourne.

Choosing the right UHF radio
Start with how you will use it. A fixed in-car unit running the full 5 watts, the legal maximum for UHF CB in Australia, paired with a properly mounted external antenna will always outperform a handheld for range. Compact units like the GME XRS-330C or TX3350 hide the main body under the dash, with everything controlled from the microphone, so they suit modern cabins with nowhere to mount a full-size radio.
Handhelds make sense as a second radio or for spotters, camp and walking away from the vehicle. The GME TX6600S gives you the full 5 watts in a portable body, while a 1 watt twin pack like the TX667TP is a cheap way to keep the passenger vehicle or the kids on channel.
Do not forget the install. Antenna position and cable routing make a real difference to range, and a fold-down mounting bracket protects the antenna in car parks and under low branches. We fit and test radios at the Burwood workshop, so the whole setup works before you leave.
UHF radio FAQs
Do I need a licence to use a UHF CB radio?
No. UHF CB in Australia is covered by a class licence, so anyone can transmit without applying for anything. You just need to follow the rules, including keeping off the emergency channels 5 and 35 unless it is a genuine emergency.
How much range will I get?
It depends on power, antenna and terrain more than the radio brand. Flat open country with a 5 watt unit and a good antenna can give you many kilometres, while hilly or timbered country cuts that right down. UHF is line of sight, so a well-mounted antenna matters as much as the radio itself.
In-car unit or handheld, which should I buy first?
If the radio is mainly for touring and convoy work, buy the in-car unit first. It transmits further, is always powered and is always where you left it. Add a handheld later for spotting on tracks or around camp.
